Part of our Rome Collection, the Pietra Pants & Shorts are the best of both worlds; a flat front, high-waisted silhouette with the comfort of an elastic waist in the back. Featuring lengthening panels in the front with slanted hip pockets and a hidden waist stay, they are so comfortable you’ll never want to take them off.

Choose between four leg styles: a wide leg in floor-skimming or cropped length (View A), a slim and tapered leg (View B), or gently flared shorts (View C).

All tops except for the close-fitting white t-shirt are the Cielo Top from our Rome Collection.

Fabric and Supplies

SUGGESTED FABRIC

This pattern can be made with a variety of fabrics depending on the desired effect. For a more defined shape, use structured wovens such as linen, chambray, or lightweight denim or twill (heavyweight wovens may create too much volume at the elastic waist). For a swishy, glamorous look, use rayon challis, tencel, or silk.

My new fav pants

I've started sewing again after several years off and chose this pattern and the cielo top as my first projects because I just could not get a brown linen pant out of my mind. Now I've sewn them up (about 3 evenings sew time) and I have a fantastic pair of pants! Any errors are a result of my own inexperience, like making a size too large (easy to fix by making the back elastic tighter) and thinking the rise is a bit too high even for me, a tall gal (my next pair I will edit the pattern before cutting). The only part that was truly confusing was making the back waist band with french side seams. I definitely didn't do it "right" but it looks good from the outside. The instructions do indicate french seams are an option for fabric that is want to fray (like linen), but no tips for accomplishing the construction in this area with them. The fit is loose and so comfortable, immediate love.

I have several pairs of linen pants/shorts planned for the Pietra pattern, but my next pair I will try in a wool suiting type fabric if I can find a good one so I can wear now in the winter. I just wore the linen version in 25F weather and it was not my finest idea.

Unusual pocket

I liked the pockets but not the elastic in the back. If I make it again I'd put in darts and a zip

For all body types!

I’ve made the wide leg shorts and the culottes. Both are awesome. Being short and short waisted, I made very small changes. Once you line up the pieces, which are easy following the excellent directions, they magically come together perfectly.
I think I need a third pair. Thinking wide leg trousers for autumn.

Pietra Shorts

I loved this pattern! Very easy to follow (I have been sewing under a year) and came together very quickly. I used a medium weight linen and I'm in love! The shorts fit me well and I feel great in them. I already have a pile of linen laid out for more in a few different colors. Thanks so much for this lovely pattern!

Pietra pants

The pants are very comfortable and I like wearing them. I made culottes version from tencel and it fits well. The only change I made was to reduce my waist height by a few inches. The instructions was very clear and sewing was fun. I would definitely do another, probably the short version of Pietra pants.
